The hard disk or HD ( Hard Disk) , is the data storage device used in most computers . In it , you can save not only your files but also all the data on your operating system , without which you could not use the computer . The hard drive is not a new device but rather a technology that has evolved over time. One of the first drives that we know is the IBM 305 RAMAC . Available in 1956 , was able to store up to 5 MB of data ( a breakthrough for the time) and had tremendous dimensions : 14 x 8 inches. Its price was not too inviting : the 305 RAMAC cost about $ 30,000 .
Over the years , hard drives have been increasing their storage capacity , while it became smaller , cheaper and more reliable . Just to illustrate how " giant" were the first models , the photo below shows a hard drive used by the São Paulo Metro in its early years . The device is on display at the Center for Operational Control of the company :
Components of a HD
To help you understand the basic operation of the hard drives , need to know its main components . The much- mentioned discs actually are stored in a kind of " metal box " . These boxes are sealed to prevent entry of foreign material, because even a speck of dust can damage the discs , since they are quite sensitive . This means that if you open your hard drive in an unprepared environment without the use of equipment and proper techniques , the chances of you losing it are extremely large .
